No KrisFlyer elite miles on Virgin Atlantic flights

I just received a communication from Singapore Airlines informing that starting 1 July 2016, KrisFlyer members will not be able to earn any KrisFlyer élite miles on Virgin Atlantic operated flights between the Americas and Europe. You are although eligible to earn KrisFlyer élite miles on the rest of Virgin Atlantic’s non-transatlantic flight network. Do note that KrisFlyer élite miles count towards your KrisFlyer status and are different from the redeemable miles accrued via travel and credit cards etc. I see this as a fallout from the Delta trying to exert more control over the lucrative trans-Atlantic sector run by Virgin in direct competition with British Airways. With the latest announcement of aligning of Delta and Virgin schedules between this route, this fallout was inevitable.…

Malaysia Airlines offering 50% off on redemptions

Malaysia Airlines is running a promo offering 50% off on redemptions made from 18th to February 22nd, 2016. The travel period for this redemption campaign is from February 20th to May 20th, 2016. The London route is served by the Airbus A380s that the airline has and is also the only remaining route of the airline to the European continent. The discount does seem like a nice one but if you factor in the 15% online redemption discount that the airline already provides on its online redemptions and the atrocious devaluation that it did recently, the actual savings are ok at best. The flight schedules of the flights on which these redemptions can be made are stated below: For redemptions, members can log on to…

American and Delta to scrap the interline agreement

Delta and American have decided to end their interline agreement that allowed them to put their passengers on each other’s flights during irregular operations (IRROPS) situations. With this change, now passengers of two of the biggest airlines have reduced number of options available to them for being accommodated onto other flights. Not only is this going to make things inconvenient during times where weather plays havoc but it may also end up to longer wait times and connection issues in many cases. I can understand why Delta wants to end this relationship; they have been harping about their on-time performance and have been a making a killing with low fuel prices driving up their sales and profitability. On the other hand American has been playing…

Cathay Pacific plane makes an emergency landing in the middle of nowhere

No one likes emergency landings to happen to them neither the crew nor the passengers as it breaks your otherwise smooth journey into a not so expected detour which can sometime get unbearably painful. Still there are situations where you may end up landing at otherwise full-fledged airports or at times at airports with bare basics but rarely would it be a situation where you would end up landing an island that just houses an air force base. According to Bloomberg, a Cathay Pacific flight from Hong Kong to Los Angeles made an emergency landing at the Eareckson Air Station, Shemya Island which is about 1,500 miles off the coast of Alaska and is nearer to Russia than it is to the USA but being…

Ryanair to sell Aer Lingus stake to IAG

Ryanair has just announced that is accepting the £961 million IAG (parent company of British Airways) bid for Aer Lingus. The bid that was already blessed by the Irish authorities was already a precursor for the complete takeover of Aer Lingus and integration into the IAG network. The trans-Atlantic flight routes from Dublin are too hard to resist for Heathrow slot starved IAG. Ryanair owns 29.8% of Aer Lingus and wasn’t really a willing party to sell out the stake. They tried thrice to buy over Aer Lingus but failed in all their bids due to stiff opposition from all ends. I guess no wanted Ryanair to dominate the Irish market leaving them with no other option but to sell out. We may soon see…

The era of fare unbundling is about to hit full service carriers

Christoph Müller is an interesting man, the new CEO of the troubled Malaysia Airlines has always been known as a ‘terminator’ for his skills related to cost cutting by trimming workforce and brining airlines back to profit. He has done this successfully with Aer Lingus and Sabena in the past and he has already started that process at Malaysia Airlines by letting go almost 6,000+ employees of the airline. What’s really catching the eye though is his statements this week at the IATA Annual General Meeting in Miami about turning the airline into a “value airline” for its customers by offering customized unbundled fares where customers have a choice to choose what all features they and what they don’t. He has discussed about unbundling business…
