Garuda switches London Heathrow flight to Singapore

Starting 31st March 2016, Garuda Indonesia has started flying direct 5 times a week (every other day except Monday and Friday) from Singapore to London (Heathrow) one way basis. The airline has done this due to the ongoing runway issues at the Jakarta airport which limits the take-off weight from the airport. The airlines 77-300ERs are exceeding the runway restrictions on full load. The airline is marketing this one-way flight big time to gauge market interest given that it is competing against the likes of every big airline that is directly or indirectly flying this route. The airline, based on the response it gets to the flight may make this flight a permanent feature should it get a strong uptake although its limited by the fact…

Air Canada flight diverted twice!

An Air Canada flight from Frankfurt to Toronto  had the misfortune of being diverted to London’s Heathrow airport twice on the same day in a matter of hours. According to the news article, the flight AC 873 on 3rd March 2016 took off from Frankfurt and right when it hit the UK shores, the crew detected an electrical odour and pilots declared an emergency and landed at the Heathrow airport for further checks. On being cleared for take-off after no issues were found, the plane took off again only to return back to Heathrow with the same issue. This must have been a great inconvenience for the passengers and a huge cost for the airline also as they ended up accommodating all the 336 passengers on-board…

Malaysia Airlines is running a promo offering 50% off on redemptions made from 18th to February 22nd, 2016. The travel period for this redemption campaign is from February 20th to May 20th, 2016. The London route is served by the Airbus A380s that the airline has and is also the only remaining route of the airline to the European continent. The discount does seem like a nice one but if you factor in the 15% online redemption discount that the airline already provides on its online redemptions and the atrocious devaluation that it did recently, the actual savings are ok at best. The flight schedules of the flights on which these redemptions can be made are stated below: For redemptions, members can log on to…

Tightrope walking at the most unusual place

When you design a mega structure like an airport terminal it is assumed that you will take into consideration every possible thing that can go wrong. Apparently the designers of Heathrow Terminal 5 seem to have gotten the basic concept wrong. As per a story published by Gizmodo, nearly 60% of light bulbs in the terminal are non-functional due to lack of a cost effective solution to fix them. So how does the terminal intend to solve this problem? Well the airport wants to hire tightrope walkers to fix them. So much for spending of billions of dollars to create a world class terminal and then stumbling over such small oversights. If only they had thought of this while designing they would have been spared…

Air Asia to discontinue flights to Europe and India

Malaysian long haul carrier Air Asia X has planned to scrap its unprofitable routes to Europe and India. The carrier that is planning to list itself in the near future independently from its low cost pioneer parent Air Asia, is ceasing operations to Mumbai from January 2012, while services to New Delhi, London and Paris will cease in March 2012. The airline is citing weak European economy/reduced demand, continued high fuel prices and high airport and government taxes including 1 Jan 2012 carbon tax as the reasons for discontinuation of its services. London and Paris were the only European destinations that the low carrier was flying and this effectively puts an end to its ambitions to fly to those sectors unless the current European crisis…
